Kinasi Lodge was designed , built and is managed by its owners for whom it is a much-loved home. Kinasi has been Mafia Island’s premier boutique hotel since 1996 and is set in landscaped gardens overlooking Chole Bay. We would like our guests to become new friends and to get involved in Mafia the way our family has been able to live and enjoy the people of Mafia, the natural world and its fishing, diving and snorkeling, sailing and picnicking and all the other attractions and interests…. all without any crowds and all directly from Kinasi Lodge. We have provided everything to allow you to do this in comfort and as close to nature as possible… amenities include extensive reception-lounge and bar areas, fifteen traditional coastal bungalows with wide verandahs, ensuite bathrooms, hairdryers and robes, two restaurant venues and a wine cellar, swimming pool with grill and lounge area, in-house PADI dive centre and watersports, boats and sport fishing, a designer Thai spa and beauty treatments, business centre with wifi and laptop computers available, vehicle hire and airport transfer services.
...and to enjoy your stay in “Swahili Time”, the relaxed ritual of Island Life.
Kinasi faces to the south-east overlooking Mafia Island Marine Park. Looking out from Kinasi you will see Chole Island in the left foreground, with Juani Island behind – separated by a narrow channel that is not visible, and Jibondo island in the distance, to the right of Juani.
We opened Kinasi in January 1996, after designing and building it ourselves. the setting is tropical gardens on a hillside with the bungalows below coconut palms, leading down to the swimming pool and private beach.
Kinasi is a special place that reflects our dream of creating a wonderful retreat in which to enjoy one of Africa’s finest marine parks. The design and style of Kinasi is somewhat eccentric “tropical island” a bit eclectic and definitely individual, with influences from the Swahili Coast, African craftsmen, Morocco and Italy.
The atmosphere is intentionally informal and homely. We have beautiful antiques (collected in Mafia !), Tanzanian hand-made furniture, beautiful fabrics and rugs because Kinasi is our pride and our home.
All the cottages, set apart and with privacy, are large and airy, with an en-suite bathroom and covered verandah furnished with hammock, chairs and table, plenty of hanging space and shelves, desk and chair, bedside lights and reading lights.
The rooms have fans situated within walk-in mosquito nets that cover the king-size beds, and have been designed for through-ventilation and coolness in all seasons.
