The turtle conservation programme has been one of Mafia’s outstanding successes through the combined efforts of Sea Sense and Mafia Island Marine Park.

Turtle Conservation in Mafia

Sea Sense is working in partnership with local communities to monitor and protect sea turtles and is leading important research into sea turtle netsing and migratory behaviour. Since 2001 over 3,200 nests have been protected to hatching with more than 230,000 hatchlings reaching the sea safely.

Sea turtle ecotourism is providing direct benefits for communities such as the fresh water harvesting system and latrine block at Juani Primary School in Mafia Island Marine Park. And four other schools have received new desks, chairs and books. Sea Sense also has an ongoing marine education and outreach programme targeting all sectors of the community including local leaders and decision- makers of both genders

We have the precise dates for the hatching of nesting sites so join one of the informative Conservation Officers on a trip to a nesting even on the remote beaches and watch the tiny hatchlings emerge. It is a truly unforgettable experience ! Juani Island is one of the main nesting locations for these amazing creatures, particularly the Hawksbill Turtle. We leave Kinasi by boat early in the morning at seven-thirty and enjoy the beautiful early morning trip across Chole Bay to Juani Island. A short bush-walk across the island brings us to the turtle nesting beaches fronting the Indian Ocean (shown below). We carry drinking water and first aid, life jackets and communications on the boats and our Excursion Guide also accompanies you.
